BÁRBARA EUGENIA - JULY 23

Bárbara Eugenia was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and has been living in the city of Sao Paulo since 2005.

Her musical style ranges from rock, Brazilian influences, and the 70s era. Her universal appeal comes from images of past and present embracing a romantic-sardonic and sensual inspiration, all wrapped up in her unique voice. Her musical debut came when she was invited by prominent producer Apollo 9 to contribute two tracks to the soundtrack for the Brazilian 2006 Sundance Festival-screened film “O Cheiro do Ralo”.

Next she started the “Les Provocateurs” project with Edgard Scandurra, one of Brazil’s biggest names in the rock scene. Les Provocateurs is a tribute band to Serge Gainsbourg, one of Barbara’s influences.

Barbara joined 3 Na Massa project, in which women sang tunes by famous male Brazilian musicians made for women to sing, before releasing her first album, Journal de Bad. Produced by Junior Boca and Dustan Gallas, the album was completed in late 2010 and contained thirteen songs written by Bárbara or partners Jam da Silva, Tatá Aeroplano and Junio Barreto. Among them was a version of Dor e Dor, by Tom Zé, a hugely influential artist of the Tropicalia movement. Zé himself participated in recording this track. Zé was the first artist signed to the David Byrne's Luaka Bop label.

Her voice, singing style and melody explain why Bárbara gained recognition right after her first album release. She was part of several projects paying tribute to great Brazilian musicians. She also has made appearances on Brazilian Television.

Bárbara established herself as one of the major female vocalists on the Brazilian independent scene when she released her second album in May 2013, “É o que temos”. Produced by Clayton Martin (Cidadão Instigado) and Edgard Scandurra, the album appeared on “best of the year” lists. She also received an award for best version of the year for Porque Brigamos, a Portuguese language version of Neil Diamond's hit "I Am I Said" originally recorded in Brazil by singer Diana.
